PASSAGE 2:

MANSFIELD, Katherine (1888-1923), published only three volumes of short stories before

her death at the age of 34. Yet she is considered one of the greatest short-story writers of the

۲۰th century. Her writing shows an understanding of the reasons for people acting the way they do. She was the first writer in English to be influenced by the Russian dramatist Anton

Chekhov.

Katherine Mansfield was her pen name. She was born Kathleen Mansfield Beauchamp in

Wellington, New Zealand. Many of her best short stories take place there.

Between 1903 and 1906 Katherine Mansfield studied at Queen’s College, London. Then,

after studying music in New Zealand for two years, she returned to live in London in 1908. In 1911 she published her first book of short stories, In a German Pension. That same year she began working with the critic John Middleton Murry on a literary magazine called Rhythm. Signing her work KM, she wrote short stories and reviews for this magazine and several others. She married John Middleton Murry in 1918.

In 1917 she learned that she had tuberculosis. She spent the last years of her life mainly in

France, Italy, and Switzerland, hoping that the warmer climate would make her well. Her

illness did not keep her from writing. In 1920 she published Bliss, a second collection of short stories. A third collection, The Garden Party, was published in 1922.

After her death her husband published her Journal (1927), her Letters (1928), and two more

collections of her stories. These were The Dove’s Nest (1923) and Something Childish (1924;

called The Little Girl in the United States).
